Spring Reading: Apocalyptic

Since my thesis is coming up this summer (I hope), and since I am writing on Revelation, I am dedicating my spring reading towards Revelation and apocalyptic literature (mainly 2nd temple Jewish apocalypses).  Here are some of the books I am/will be enjoying:

Fall Reading (in no particular order)

Here is my fall reading list for my Guided Reading I class.  I kept the books general NT studies.  The spring will be more concentrated on my research project (a mini-thesis of 60 pp.).

John Piper's Sermons on Romans

For my morning reading, I decided that a good "quiet time" would be to read a sermon a day through Piper's exposition through Romans. (Cf. the tab above "What Tim is Reading" if you are interested in what else I am stimulating my cerbral cortex with)

 If you know me, you know I can't stand "devotionals" that are shallow, short, and shamefully lacking theological value (pretty much all of them!). What I love about this is that it is sermons from one of the 20th centuries greatest preachers (of course he is still preaching). So it is loaded with the practical value that many desire for a quiet time devotional. But it also has the great value of John Piper's insights into Romans (perhaps the most important book in the NT). Oh how I wish he would do a commentary on the book (cf. my review on his short commentary book on Rom. 9).

 The major downside is that sermons don't always communicate most effectively through manuscript. But if you have heard Piper preach at all, you can picture and hear his words in your mind. All in all, this series is excellent and highly recommended for Christians wanting to dive into God's Word and be challenged by it at the same time.  Double thumbs up for a "quiet time devotional" (we need to change these lame cliche titles for this)!!!

Summer Vacation!

So we arrived in Charlotte, NC late last night.  Ryan, my fantastic brother, picked us up from the airport even though he had to work the next day.  He even cooked breakfast for me the following morning (Liz slept in)!

On the itinerary for our summer is to meet up with Steven, Amanda, & Kates tonight for dinner.  We head out to Florida to see my Andrea, Ella, parents, and grandparents for a week.  Then its off to the Crystal Coast to visit la playa (had to thrown in some random Spanish) and great friends.  After a stop off at my seminary to raid the library, we will finally end up in Virginia.  There is a wedding at the end of summer somewhere, but that seems too far away to think about. 

Somewhere amongst all of this traveling, I am taking a directed study w/ my mentor, David Alan Black, on the subject "The New Testament's Use of the Old Testament."  Here is my reading list for this summer:
